The Child Opportunity Index (COI) is a measure of relative opportunity across all neighborhoods in a metropolitan area. The index is calculated based on indicators in three opportunity domains: Educational Opportunity, Health and Environmental Opportunity, and Social and Economic Opportunity.
Recently, the COI was featured in the public health blog "The Pump Handle." Author Kim Krisberg discussed how the COI can be applied to the field of public health. She writes, "The tool can also be used to tease out the neighborhood factors that are especially protective of child health as well as encourage cross-sector and regional collaborations between the public health and community development sectors."
