The Child Opportunity Index (COI) is a measure of relative opportunity across all neighborhoods in a metropolitan area. The index is calculated based on indicators in three opportunity domains: Educational Opportunity, Health and Environmental Opportunity, and Social and Economic Opportunity.

This story on WESA, Pittsburgh's NPR news station, highlights racial/ethnic disparities in the Pittsburgh area. Out of the 100 metropolitan areas included in the COI, Pittsburgh ranked the 21st worst in terms of opportunities for black children. Nearly half of them live in very low opportunity neighborhoods, as compared to only 9 percent of white children in the Pittsburgh area.
