The Child Opportunity Index allows us to answer new questions about the relationship between neighborhoods and child health and wellbeing. In the past several years, a growing number of new academic papers and reports have used the Child Opportunity Index to explore the connection between neighborhoods and child health outcomes, health care utilization, housing, education and early childhood.

Through these papers, we see mounting evidence of the importance of neighborhoods for child wellbeing—and of the ways in which persistent neighborhood segregation has led to vastly inequitable outcomes for children. The fast-growing pace of these new publications speaks to the increasing understanding among researchers that equitable access to opportunity-rich neighborhoods is key to ensuring that all children have the resources they need to succeed.
